  • WordPress & Facebook Conundrum

Facebook is no longer allowing websites to be able to post to Profiles, so I’ve had to rework my auto-posting from Sethen.com.  At first, I was going to make a Facebook Page for my Minecraft stuff, but then I realized that ALL my posts would be going there, unless I uncheck a box when I post.  This is less than ideal.  I’m now wondering if I should just make the Facebook Page simply for Sethen.com as a whole, so everything will go there.

I also finally figured out why the website wasn’t posting to Google+ when it was setup to do so.  It turns out that the API that does the posting does NOT work for Google+ profiles that are connected to Google Apps accounts.  That explains the issue.  But eh, I don’t really use Google+ anyways, and don’t really know anyone who does.

So I need to decide if I want to make this new Facebook Page into “Sethen.com” or “Mentok the Minecrafter”.

    Thoughts?

  • Damn Facebook

Well that’s stupid.  I can’t have my website auto-post to my Facebook profile anymore. They changed it so you simply can’t do it anymore.  I can still publish to a Facebook Page.

Now I’m stuck with whether I want to create a Facebook Page for my Minecraft, or just post the links manually.  Sigh.

  • Facebook, you crafty expletive…

Facebook irritated the hell out of me today.  They overhauled the whole setup used to show a facebook page feed on a website.  It used to use an iframe, but now it uses some demonic javascript.

Visually, I love what they’ve done.  You can now see a small version of the page’s cover photo, and it looks very fancy.  I have one severe gripe though.  The widget is now limited to be a whopping 500 pixels wide.  This posed an issue for me, as I have 15 (yes, I counted) facebook feeds on TRC, and most of them are built at 800 pixels wide, to fill the page.

So I had to go and update all the coding for 15 seperate feeds tonight.  And I get to do it again at work tomorow for the 3 feeds there!

    Thanks Facebook.

  • TRC 8.1 Progress & Setbacks

    WEBCAMS

Thanks to Fred Trask of Trask Insurance and Mike Russell of ProTech Solutions, TRC now has 12 all-new, live-streaming webcams!  We still have a few more in the works, up to a possible total of 19!  We’re also working on acquiring permission to use existing webcams on Sebec and Ebeemee lakes 🙂

    FACEBOOK

Today we released 8 new Facebook pages, one for each town in TRC.  These pages will have news and local events more geared towards the individual town.  They also help expand our visibility on Facebook, as these pages show up in searches for our local towns, where TRC does not.

    SETBACKS

I also ran into a cumbersome setback today.  Part of our plan for these new Facebook pages was to have news articles and such from TRC pushed up to them, the same as our main news feed is pushed up to the TRC Facebook page. I have used RSSGraffiti (a Facebook App) to post our RSS feeds up to Facebook for quite some time now.  Well, today when I loaded them up to setup these new feeds, I stumbled across a notice that informed the service is shutting down on May 1st.  Hooray.  I use this app for 5 different feeds and 3 different pages 🙁  And here I am, trying to add 8 more feeds and pages to the damn thing.

I spent the afternoon researching alternative methods and didn’t find anything that was awesome as RSSGraffiti.  I discovered one service that has a free option that will JUST cover everything we currently have running.  Their base payed plan which is about $100/year would JUST cover this expansion to the 8 new pages.  And we don’t have that kind of regular money kicking around.

Needless to say, we’re going to be posting content to these new pages manually, at least for the time being.  I may look into some other methods first. I do have till May 1st after all.

  • Stupid Friggen Facebook

I sat down and attempted to weed out my friends list.  I have 459 friends on it, and probably 200 of them are people I never talk to or hardly know, and don’t really need to see updates from.

Well, its virtually impossible to simply edit your friends list now.  They made it “easier” by making it simpler to add and remove friends from their individual page.  Thats going to take FOREVER to go through.

I gave up.  Its not worth it.
